NJFID & Pistol Permits Process

To purchase a firearm in New Jersey, you must apply for a New Jersey Firearms Identification (NJFID) Card or a NJ E-Permit to Purchase a Handgun (E-Permit) via the NJ Firearms Application & Registration System (FARS). Here’s a detailed step-by-step guide to assist you in the process:

Step 1: Visit the NJ Portal

Begin your application by visiting the New Jersey State Police Firearms Application & Registration System (FARS). You can find the portal at the official NJ Portal website.

Step 2: Obtain the ORI Number

You’ll need the Originating Agency Identifier (ORI) number for your local police department or state agency. This ORI number identifies the agency responsible for processing your application.

  • Make sure you get the correct ORI number, as submitting the wrong one will result in your application not being processed.
  • You can contact your local police department or state police to get the correct ORI number or search online.

Step 3: Fill Out the Application Form

When filling out the application:

  • Check the box for Initial Firearms Purchaser Identification Card if applying for the NJFID.
  • If you are purchasing a handgun, also check the box for Permit to Purchase a Handgun.

You can apply for multiple pistol permits at once, but remember:

  • You can only purchase one handgun per 30 days.
  • Permits expire after 180 days, so it is recommended not to apply for more than three at a time.

For every new handgun purchase, the process must be repeated (excluding fingerprinting if already completed).

Step 4: List References

You will need to provide the names, phone numbers, and email addresses of your references. Inform them in advance as they will receive a questionnaire via email that they must complete in order to avoid delays.

Step 5: Review and Submit

Double-check your application for accuracy. Any errors could result in denial, and you will need to start the process again.

Step 6: Get Fingerprinted

If this is your first time applying, you must schedule an appointment for fingerprinting. The FARS application will provide instructions for this step.

Failure to complete fingerprinting will result in your application being deleted from the system, and you’ll need to reapply.
